The Coast region's apex public hospital — paediatric surgery, cardiac surgery (TEVAR/MVR), neurosurgery, cancer care (2 LINACs, 140 patients/day), telemedicine (Proximie), EMR, 30+ specialties, and medical training hub with KMPDC/CUE accreditation.
Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH) is the premier public hospital serving Kenya's coastal region. Key clinical milestones:
Advanced Cancer Care: Commissioned a second IAEA-donated Linear Accelerator (LINAC) doubling daily radiotherapy throughput to 140 patients. Annual cancer patient volumes have risen from ~6,000 to over 15,000 in three years. The facility hosts the Mombasa Radiotherapy Centre, commissioned by CS Health Aden Duale and IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.
Cardiac Surgery: The Cath Lab team led by Dr. Nigel Amollo performs Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) and Mitral Valve Replacements. CGTRH now conducts four cardiac surgeries every two weeks — all covered under SHA.
Neurosurgery: Annual Neurosurgery Camp in partnership with Prof. Joachim Oertel's team from University Hospital of Saarland, Germany — providing complex brain and spine procedures free of charge.
Paediatric Excellence: Home to the Coast region's first dedicated Kids Operating Room (KidsOR) Paediatric Surgical Theatre. Services include Paediatric General Surgery, Neonatal Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Paediatric Urology and Paediatric Surgical Oncology.
Telemedicine Innovation: Integrated the Proximie augmented reality platform — allowing remote global surgical specialists to view, guide and collaborate in real-time during operations via HD cameras in maternity and general theatres.
Digital Transformation: Transitioning from paper-based records to a fully integrated Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system with phased departmental rollout.
